Door opening: differences between the various models of interior doors

Interior doors There are different opening mechanisms for interior doors on the market. It may seem like a secondary detail, but this detail has a fundamental influence on the operation and practicality of the chosen frame.

In the short guide that follows, then, we will illustrate the differences between the various types of interior door openings, as well as their many applications.

The traditional alternative: swing doors

In the case of hinged windows, opening the door involves moving the door inwards or outwards. This is the most traditional alternative on the market, capable of offering good functionality and affordable prices.

The opening of the hinged doors partially sacrifices the space in front of the door, which is why it is necessary to carefully calculate the possible measures and the encumbrance present on the sides of the window. On the other hand, the hinged opening allows for ideal light management. The lighting level can be easily changed by acting on the knitwear or on the door itself.

Space-saving fixtures: internal and external sliding doors

Sliding doors have a very special opening mechanism. These fixtures, often called invisible or space-saving, are available in two basic variants: internal and external. This is a rather important difference, at least when looking at the type of opening.

In fact, in internal sliding doors, the door slides into a hole made in the wall, in fact disappearing from view. This is the alternative with the least impact on the surrounding space, ideal for when you have to act on smaller sizes. On the other hand, this choice requires building works to be carried out.

External space-saving doors feature a similar mechanism of operation, but with one essential difference. The sash slides over the wall, thanks to a special trolley placed above the hole. Ease of installation is evident. The possible defect is given by the fact that the door, sliding, occupies a space on the side of the hole, which must therefore be left appropriately empty.

The hybrid alternative: pivoting doors

The opening of the roto-translating doors is very interesting. In these windows, in fact, the door slides on its vertical axis, moving simultaneously towards one of the two sides of the frame. Instead of occupying the entire space in front of or behind the hole, this window offers an intermediate solution, with a lower impact in terms of volume. This is, therefore, the real strength of the type of fixture in question. By taking up space in both the front and rear of the hole, but to a lesser extent than with hinged doors, an optimal result can be achieved.

The opening mechanism of the roto-translating doors is suitable for small rooms, and has an innate elegance that makes it suitable for both domestic and professional contexts.
An original way to save space: folding doors

The folding doors have an operating mechanism that adapts to delimit internal and external environments. Their original shape sees the door divided into equal parts, or into two parts of different sizes (normally one is triple the other). Acting on the handle, often recessed, all you have to do is push to the left or right. The door folds in on itself until it opens completely, leaving space for passage.

This opening mechanism allows folding doors to be installed without difficulty, even on raised surfaces. The space occupied is little, since only part of the entire surface of the sash protrudes when the frame is closed.

Folding doors therefore offer numerous advantages and allow for easy light management.

Swing doors or swing doors, with simple and functional operation

The swing doors, also known as "come and go" or saloon doors, are perfect for working environments such as restaurants and butchers, but also medical clinics. In fact, their opening and closing mechanism is very simple. To act on these fixtures it is not necessary to use your hands, but only to lean briefly on the door. The hinge mechanism allows the door to move both forwards and backwards, leaving space to enter, and then close on its own.

In terms of space management, saloon doors occupy a rather large volume, taking into account the movements of the door both forwards and backwards. It must be said, however, that the action of the door takes only a few seconds, since the door closes again as soon as the passage ends.
